A short history lesson.
On December 30, 1848, Asa Jackson was found dead at this location. According to the NH Sentinel, dated January 4, 1849 "Asa Jackson died in Swanzey NH Dec. 30, 1848, aged 42 years, but particulars of the manner in which he met his end are not given". Shortly thereafter, a monument was erected in his memory.
However, the monument was placed in the railroad right of way. The railroad had not been built when the monument was placed next to the highway after Asa's death. When the railroad was built, the monument was moved a few feet to the side of the tracks.
I am not sure if the monument is still there or not. From what I have read, it was at one point buried after being damaged by children throwing rocks and possibly sought after by souvenir hunters. So I guess this cache can serve as a "monument" to the memory of Asa Jackson. I am aware of several other deaths within a half mile of this location, including a family member years ago....but those stories should be left for another day. To find the cache, you do not have to go past the gate, or the no tresspassing sign. There is parking for one car next to the road, it is pretty much a park and grab.
