Geocache Description:

For quite some time I have driven along the coastal road, looking up towards where the Pill Box View Cache was.  I could never spot that Pill Box but I always saw the Pill Box a mile north of it.  I always told myself that once I found the Pill Box View cache, I would find the 2nd Pill Box.  Today, I found the Pill Box View Cache, and then found the 2nd Pill Box.  In actuality, this is another Pill Box that I did not see from the road.  The one I saw is down the hill from this one (making 3 Pill Boxes on the ridge) but it is on private property, so don't go there.  The hike and views from this Pill Box were just too incredible not to share....

Getting to the cache:  The primary trailhead is located up in the Sunset Hills subdivision.  See the waypoints for the parking and the trailhead coordinates.  Before starting my hike, I talked with some local mountain bikers who have poured an incredible amount of TLC into the trails up here.  (You can easily ride a mountain bike from the parking coords to the cache.)  They gave me a map showing over 22 miles of trails up here!  (This map has been scanned and uploaded to the cache page, see below) The alternate coordinates for parking are from their map.  This trailhead is in the parking lot of the elementary school along the coastal road. I visually identified the trailhead but cannot give any information about the quality of the trail. (ah, the dilemma for FTFers and vacationers "in a rush" )

The trail from the primary parking coordinates:  This is an easy and enjoyable trail!  There is definitely a quicker way between the 1st and 3rd trail reference points listed but I chose to follow the old road.  There are many side trails but if you follow the old road, you will get to the cache with no problems.  Usually roads this wide were only built to support moving artillery into position to defend Hawaii  during WWII. The dug out position behind the last trail reference point prior to the cache seems to validate this.  (If anyone has/knows of more information I'd love to add it to the cache page!)  It took me a little less than an hour to get to GZ, moving at a good pace and without a break. There is a nice picnic bench though about a mile from the cache for those looking to kick up their heels along the way.

Some might be inclined to "bee line" from the primary parking coordinates or from the first cache up here to this one.  Please pay attention to topography.  There is a significant gulch between the two caches, hence the 60ish minute travel time to circumnavigate it...but the views are worth it!
