Geocache Description:

The Mt. Tabor cinder cone is one of a handful of extinct volcanos within the city limits (Rocky Butte, Kelly Butte, and Powell Butte are the other three), and is part of the extensive network of cinder cones and shield volcanos that make up the Boring Lava Field. It dates back to the Plio-Pleisticine era, but has been extinct for roughly 300,000 years.

The 196 acres of land making up Mt. Tabor Butte  was identified for park use in the 1880's due to its ideal elevation for a water distribution system. The peak of the extinct cinder cone stands a mere 636 ft. above sea level. City fathers formed a water committee and created a municipal water system, piping water some 25 miles from the Bull Run Watershed to Mt. Tabor reservoirs and across the Willamette River to City Park reservoirs (now Washington Park) in 1894. The Bull Run Watershed was among the first of federal lands set aside in the Forest Reserve Act of 1891 and enacted by president Benjamin Harrison. The reservoirs were built between the period of 1894 and 1911. The volcanic nature of the park was first noted in 1912. It was named after another peak in Israel by Plympton Kelly, whose homestead was located near present-day Kelly Butte. Plympton was the son of reverend Clinton Kelly, an Oregon City pioneer for whom nearby Clinton Street was named, and was also the older brother of Penumbra Kelly, who became sheriff of Multnomah county in 1888. Now that you've had your history lesson, feel free to find the cache...

...You'll find it in this tree, which appears to be clinging to a part of its own rocky past. Some agility may be required for a successful retrieval. The sturdy branches are your best bet. Please replace it as you found it, as there is not a lot of natural cover... ***(Congratulations on the FTF goes to revbuggy and sons!)*** "This cache complies with geocaching policies for Portland Parks & Recreation properties. Please respect park hours when caching."
