Geocache Description:

Part of the Illawarra's Industrial Heritage.

The Dapto Smelting Works resulted from the works started under the "Lake Illawarra Harbour Scheme".

In 1890 a Parliamentary Act was passed authorising the Illawarra Harbour and Land Corporation to begin projects near Dapto. The scope of these projects was to include a railway for transport of coal to shipping, as well as a 25m deep channel through Lake Illawarra to allow ships berth at a location north of Kanahooka Point. As I understand this channel is linked to the remnants of a railway identified at the Earthcache 'Almost Destroyed' by Krafty Charlie.

In 1899, the railway was completed, and the Smelting Company of Australia Ltd. was established.

The smelter at its peak - the mine employed over 500 men, many housed under canvas.

From 1899 the smelter treated lead, silver, zinc, copper and gold - however in 1905 production ceased with  competition starving the smelter its supply of ore from Western Australia and Broken Hill.

The cache is located within view of the last major remnants of a once significant driver to development in the Dapto area.
