There has been lots of debate on where the Highest Point on Route 66 is located some claim it is Glorieta Pass (7,432’) near Sante Fe, New Mexico and others the continental divide near Thoreau (7,263’). Regardless of where the actual highest point on historic Route 66 is the crossing here near Brannigan Park and Forty Nine Hill is the highest point it crossed in Arizona. The elevation here is somewhere near 7,415 feet and is on the 1931 alignment.
If you look closely on the east side of the hill you can still see bits and pieces of the 1921 road. Take your time and please slow down when passing near the few houses to avoid dust and most important “Watch for Children” and animals along the roadside.
