Jack Rittenhouse, in his 1946 A Guide Book to Highway 66, referred to this spot as “A tree shaded camping spot here (L), maintained free by the U.S. Government”.
There are several small picnic tables and pit toilets for your convenience. Note that as you traveled the Mother Road there was a short section with concrete paving, most of the slabs were part of the 1939 upgrade constructed with local materials. In the late 90’s Coconino County in cooperation with the Kaibab National Forest worked to preserve this piece of history by stabilizing the slabs and replacing only those that were beyond repair.
