St Peter & St Paul - West Mersea
It is thought that St. Cedd and his monks came across the Blackwater Estuary from Bradwell-on-Sea (only three miles away) where St. Cedd founded his little monastery circa 654 and built the historic St. Peter's Chapel out of the remains of the Roman fort of Othona to establish the first church here at West Mersea, also dedicated to St. Peter.
The beautiful, historic Church of St Peter and St Paul has stood in the West Mersea village centre for many centuries and is a well loved landmark for the local community and visitors.
The 11th century tower has considerable use of Roman tiles and brick in it, from the Roman villa which stood near the site. The nave and chancel are probably 14th century. The two north chancel windows were replaced with perpendicular style stone frames in the early 20th century.
The cache is located in an very visable area so please use stealth when collecting and returning it.
