When you find this cache you will be standing in a wonderful and unique location at least 12,000,000 years old.
Look around you – you are in the crater of an extinct volcano.
Look around your feet and you will see small semi-precious stones – Garnets – scattered everywhere in the sand. At first they look like small peppercorns, but find a large one and its purple colour gleams through. During the 20th century these garnets were used as industrial abrasives due to their hardness, but who knows; maybe a large one suitable for a necklace lies in some hidden crevice somewhere.
If this wasn’t enough, within the crater are the remains of an underwater reef covered with fossilised coral, showing that millions of years ago this area was under the sea – a fact difficult to envisage today.
There are several ways to get to the cache, but the easiest and most interesting entry is to park on an unmade road at N 36°57.250 W 002°10.116 and walk along a canyon for about 20 minutes, into the volcano’s heart.
