"The residential cluster was built during 1937~1941. It consists of four typical Japanese house buildings. The southwestern and the southeastern ones are the same, and the northwestern and the northeastern ones are smaller in size. Two family units were attached to form a building. Each unit is made up of a vestibule, living room, headroom, toilet and kitchen, respectively. Windowsills were installed in the main room, the interior floor was raised above the ground, and ventilation openings were created in the fundamental of the the building. The residential buildings employed wooden framework. The base was constructed in bricks, the walls were built with bamboo and mud and covered with cedar to protect from rain drops, and the roof was covered with Japanese-Style tiles."

「西元 1909 年，山腳居民陳情希望設立山腳分校未獲准，1911 年台灣總督佐久間左馬太同意設立，西元 1912 年暫以苑裡帽蓆公司山腳工廠開分校上課，大正 5 年（1916）年才獨立為山腳公學校。山腳國小位於錦山山麓，西元 1941 年日本政府將學校改名為錦山國民學校，西元 1945 年台灣光復改稱錦華國民學校，西元 1946 年再改名山腳國民學校，沿用迄今。」

「山腳國小日治後期宿舍群，座落於校園東北角落，現存包括前、後 2 排，4 棟 8 戶，建築基地完整，該建築群為典型日式宿舍建築，有強烈的日式建築風格。每棟均為雙拼式格局，地板挑高，與地面距離設置通氣窗保持通風；每戶均有玄關、客廳、臥室、廁所、廚房、前後院；地基則為磚造；牆壁為編竹夾泥牆，外覆以檜木板；屋頂舖文化瓦；特殊之建築風格足以展現地域風貌及不易再現的特質，在現今社區建築物已難追尋，為地方留下無可取代的歷史見證。」
