Built in 1902, this was originally the Friendship Baptist Church. In 1965, the congregation outgrew the space and moved a few blocks away.
The painting of the chuch was organized by DC-based Art Gallery Art Whino to coincide with the 2012 (e)merge art fair, Art Whino wrote on their project page that they were:
“...pleased to announce a very special project in the Nation's Capital with Atlanta-based artist Alex Brewer, better known as HENSE. HENSE’s unique language of organic shapes and abstract approach sets his work apart from the rest and results in work that is instantly recognizable. Among his many mural projects he recently completed murals at the Museum of Design Atlanta, the Canal Walk in Richmond, VA and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. When we were granted the privilege of painting an 10,000sqft building in the SW corridor of DC, HENSE was the perfect choice to bring new life to this area of the city with the great energy and lively color of his shapes..”
The entire church structure is transformed by Hense with colors and lines both vibrant and subtle. If at all possible, try to walk around the structure to take it all in.
In 2013, the structure was transformed into Culture House. Founded on the principle that art is a catalyst for change in the community, Culture House is dedicated to providing inspiration and motivation for those who encounter its power, either through experience or events. Its mission is to provide a functional art space for all to enjoy and learn more about the arts culture through exhibits, events, live performances, and artist workshops. The venue embraces all things creative with all its being.
As usual with these city hides, coords are approximate; once you see the church you'll need to rely on your geosense more than your GPS. Please remember to replace as found, and don't forget your writing utensil -- enjoy!
** Congrats again to unusualsuspect for this making his 198th FTF! **
