Geocache Description:

A quick park & grab near the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

This is the eleventh of what I'm calling the 'Oscar'-series, dedicated to my first adventuring partner, my dad. Each cache in the series will be at various adventure spots that we shared over the years.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was founded in 1916 and presently includes Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. 

Growing up as a kid in Hilo, we often took family trips up "to the volcano" for hiking or camping adventures.  Highlights include picnicking at Bird Park, camping overnight near the footprint trail, hiking the Kilauea Iki crater trail, exploring Thurston Lava Tube, picking poha berries along the Devastation Trail, and even nearly getting trampled by a panicked horse while hiking down the Hilina Pali.  Good times indeed.

UPDATE: The cache has been upgraded to a pretty large plastic container hidden near the eastern entrance to the park. Please note that there is a Letterbox very nearby as well - do not confuse it w/ this cache. With the out-of-town traffic that this one sees, should be a great TB hotel.  Good luck!
