The starting coordinates are not for the final cache but for the Town Clock where you will find the answer to the first question. There is a car park close to East Beach where you can park and stroll into the town. Please be aware that car parking charges apply.
As a town, Sheringham did not come into being until the end of the 19th century, greatly helped by the arrival of the railway in 1887. Crabs and lobsters caught in the morning, could be in London later that same day, and middle class Londoners discovered the quaint fishing town. As a result fishermen rented out their cottages to visitors, and found that they could earn more money in the summer than they could from the sea in a whole year.
Despite this relatively short history, compared to older market towns, there has been a huge amount of change over the last hundred years, much of which can be discovered by walking round the town.
Many important locations are marked with a blue plaque. In order to find this cache you will need to discover some of these and obtain information from the plaque or the surrounding area. As there are a number of sites of interest I have placed four caches that will take you to the north, south east and west of the town.
This particular cache will take you to the Eastern side of the town.

The Town Clock is the town's most recognised landmark. It was built in 1862 as a holding reservoir, part of the town's water supply, complete with public tap and horse trough. the clock was given to the town by Mrs Mary Pym as an Easter offering in 1901. When water mains had been connected and the need for a reservoir no longer existed the building was converted for use as a public shelter and was further restored in 1989.

This building was once the site of the medieval St Nicholas Chapel. The earliest record of this chapel appears IN 1459, and although in a ruinous state in 1713, and partly demolished in 1928, some of the original building has survived and has been incorporated into what is now a private dwelling. In 1856 the site was the home of James Aldridge, who operated a twice weekly carrier service to Norwich and whose stables and coach-yard extended through to Co-operative Street.

At the far end of Wyndham Street there is a row of cottages on the left hand side, facing South up Beeston Road. Although these have been restored hey are some of the oldest in the town. On the opposite side of the street is the old Smoke House. This had originally been a farm building and was converted to residential use in the late 1980’s. At this time it still contained racks or smoking the fish and the spits onto which the herring were threaded.
