It was once a small village and has two mentions in the Doomsday Book and two entries in the Magna Carta.
There were many ancient small coal pits in the parish. These were called "bell pits", named because of their shape, with a small short vertical shaft and a bell end, where coal was removed. It is recorded that the coal from the parish was used to finance the building of Wollaton Hall in the 1500s
[White's "Directory of Nottinghamshire," 1853] states;
"Bilborough is a small, pleasant village and parish 3½ miles west north west of Nottingham. It contains 255 inhabitants and 1098 acres of clay land, the whole of which belongs to James Thomas Edge Esq., except the Broxtow Hall estate, which is the property of Lord Middleton. The church is a small structure, with a tower and one bell. it is dedicated to St Martin, and is a rectory valued in the King's books at £3 12s 6d, and now £273. The Rev. William Topham Hobson M.A. is the rector, and resides at the rectory house, a handsome mansion built in 1842 at a cost of about £2,000.."
Bilborough expanded when the slums in the centre of Nottingham began to be cleared, the housing being made available to the colliers working at the Babbington Colliery Cinderhill (now Phoenix Park) Babbington colliery began in the 1840’s and ceased around 1983.
Although a small suburb, Bilborough has a great community spirit with two well supported community centres, the newest only being complete in 2011. The Harvey Haddon stadium a well known sports complex is also on the outskirts of Bilborough
