Geocache Description:

The starting coordinates are not for the final cache but for a location where you will find the answer to the first question. There is a car park near the train station (see parking waypoint) - please be aware that there is a charge to park.  Alternatively there is some free parking in the residential streets close by.

Sheringham as a town, did not come into being until the end of the 19th century, greatly helped by the arrival of the railway in 1887. Crabs and lobsters caught in the morning, could be in London later that same day, and middle class Londoners discovered the quaint fishing town. As a result fishermen rented out their cottages to visitors, and found that they could earn more money in the summer than they could from the sea in a whole year.

Despite this relatively short history, compared to older market towns, there has been a huge amount of change over the last hundred years, much of which can be  discovered by walking round the town.

Many important locations are marked with a blue plaque.   In order to find this cache you will need to discover some of these and obtain information from the plaque or the surrounding area.  As there are a number of sites of interest I have placed four caches that will take you to the north, south east and west of the town.

A suggested starting point for all four caches is the town clock in the centre of Sheringham - N52 56.612 E001 12.669

This particular cache will take you roughly to the South side of the town.  From the Town Clock walk up Station Road in the direction of the Train Station.  Turn into New Street.

Go to:  N52 56.583  E001 12.702

The plaque here marks the site of the first Methodist Chapel in Sheringham. The first Methodist Evangelists reached the town in 1821, the most prominent of these being the ‘travelling preacher’ William Braithwaite.  By 1823 the Primitive Methodist  Connexion , as it was then known, had established itself in the town and their first chapel was built on this site in 1844.

Question 1:  What number is above the blue plaque?  A

Turn right into George Street.

Go to:  N52 56.507 E001 12.798

On the junction of Barford Road and George Street is a retirement home complex.  This building stands partly on the site of the town’s first County Primary School opened on 11th June 1906.  The school had three separate departments with separate head teachers – for infants, boys and girls, and a high wall separated the latter two.  Prior to this the younger children of the town went to privately run schools, there being no State school.  Older pupils, seven years and upwards, had to walk to the school in Upper Sheringham. The School closed completely on 23rd July 1986 and the building was later demolished.

Question 2:  Across the road is North Norfolk AGE UK - What year was this building built? 190B

Continue along Barford Road until it meets Beeston Road.  Turn Left.

Go to:  N52 56.562 E001 12.892

A paper Mill stood close to here  for just over 120 years. Just behind these cottages was the upper mill pond.  At that time Beeston Road was a muddy track known as Mill Lane.

Question 3: What dates do you see on the blue plaque?  1750-187C

Go to:  N52 56.613 E001 12.849

This was the site of the lower mill pond.  On the other side of the road was a chapel which has now been converted into residential accommodation.  It was built in 1859 by the Free Methodists using flints carted up from the beech and knapped by local craftsmen. Burials took place in the Chapel Yard until 1892.

Question 4:  What are the shop’s opening times?  8.30am – D.00pm

The opening times you are looking for have altered due to the Covid restrictions and may well change again, so for the time being I am giving you the value of D which is 8

Go to:  N52 56.610 E001 12.797

Johnny Johnson’s Boatyard used to stand here.  Formerly an apprentice, Johnny took over  Leonard Lown’s business and built over 130 boats here.

Question 5:  Next door are Gresham Cottages.  What date do you see?  18EF

You now have the numbers you need to find the final cache for Sheringham Twixt Sea and Pine #3 – South which can be found at:

N52 56.(B)(C)(A-F)   E001 13.(E-D)(F+B)(F)

You can either  walk up co-operative street and the High Street to return to the Town Clock or you can continue onto the final cache which is just a short walk away or you can drive to the final location.

The final cache is a disguised tube. Tweezers may be helpful to extract the log.
