Geocache Description:

The starting coordinates are not for the final cache but for a location where you will find the answer to the first question. There is a car park in Morris Street which is close by (see parking Waypoint). There is a charge to park.  Alternatively there is some free parking in the residential streets close by.

Sheringham as a town, did not come into being until the end of the 19th century, greatly helped by the arrival of the railway in 1887. Crabs and lobsters caught in the morning, could be in London later that same day, and middle class Londoners discovered the quaint fishing town. As a result fishermen rented out their cottages to visitors, and found that they could earn more money in the summer than they could from the sea in a whole year.  

Despite this relatively short history, compared to older market towns, there has been a huge amount of change over the last hundred years, much of which can be  discovered by walking round the town.



Many important locations are marked with a blue plaque.   In order to find this cache you will need to discover some of these and obtain information from the plaque or the surrounding area.  As there are a number of sites of interest I have placed four caches that will take you to the north, south east and west of the town.

A suggested starting point for all four caches is the town clock in the centre of Sheringham - N52 56.612 E001 12.669

This particular cache will take you to the north (coastal) part of the town.  From the Town Clock walk towards the sea.

On the west side of the street between two shops the blue plaque on the wall commemorates the town’s first Post Office.

Question 1: What number do you see on the blue lamp post next to the plaque? 8A6  A

Walk towards the sea and after about 15 yards turn left  and take a small detour into West Cliff

In the left hand corner of this cul-de-sac is Temple Court. This site once housed a Church of England Chapel of Ease. The first service took place here on 23rd January 1842. Services ceased in 1897 when St Peter’s Church was consecrated. It then became known as the Church Rooms and during the last war featured as a first-aid centre and then as a service clubroom. It also served as a band-room before becoming an auctioneer’s saleroom and a furniture shop. It was demolished to make way for the present building.

Return to the High Street and continue towards the sea. Turn into Gun Street.

The Gun at the top left-hand corner of Gun Street possibly dates from the time of the Spanish Amada in 1588 when a similar one was shown as part of the towns defences at the Old Hithe.   The Gun was mentioned in a petition by the townspeople in July 1673 when defences were being sought against threatened invasion by the Dutch.

Walk down Gun Street and onto Lifeboat Plain

The attractive tall building , now a community facility was constructed as a Lifeboat House to accommodate Sheringham’s first RNLI boat, the Duncan.  It had a reading room upstairs which later became a venue for entertainments.  The lifeboat slipway originally went down between the Mo and Crown Yard as it then was but this was so badly damaged in a storm on 28th January 1897 that its use was discontinued.

The name, Oddfellows Hall reflects a long and continuing relationship between the town of Sheringham and the ‘Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows’.  The building features an impressive Oak framed glass and steel entrance in the shape of the prow of a lifeboat.

With the sea behind you, look to your right and you will see what was once ‘Emery’s Boatbuilding Shed’.  It was here that the Henry Upcher lifeboat was built.  This two storey building saw boats being built on both floors.  The last boat to be built here was in 1957 although a repair business continued until 1980. The early Salvationists met in the net loft here in 1888 prior to building their citadel in Cremer Street in 1896.

You can either return to the Town Clock via Gun Street and the High Street or continue on to find the cache which is just a short walk away.  You are looking for a clear vial.
