Geocache Description:

I thought I would name some caches after some of the critters that you may spot out here on the Kiwanis Trail. Some are more abundant than others. Keep your eyes open, you never know what you may sneak up on!

Unicorns go largely unnoticed in Michigan because of their secretive and ethereal nature. Their strong, stout bodies are built for rapid running so they are capable of hiding themselves quickly when alarmed. Because of these traits, it is difficult to get an accurate estimate of population size. The American Unicorn is listed as a Michigan Species of Concern by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. You should at least pretend to exhibit a modicum of concern as well.

Description
Like their close relative, the pegasus, unicorns appear to resemble white horses, but with some minor differences. They do not have wings but do exhibit a large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from the forehead, and sometimes the male has a goat's beard.

Habitat and Habits
Unicorns are an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which can only be captured by a virgin. Be sure to bring one along. The most obvious signs of unicorn presence are their scat, which resembles horse poop with a sprinkling of fairy dust.

Reproduction and Care of the Young
Unicorns usually remain solitary except during the mating season which occurs in the summer and early autumn. Although rarely observed, the actual act is best handled by averting ones eyes and pretending to read the newspaper. The young are born in a hay lined manger-like nest. They are lightly furred and walk immediately after birth. They remain with their mother until late fall, another five or six months, when the family disperses. It is best not to hang around during the dispersal ceremonies as it can become overly dramatic.
