Geocache Description:

519's Turn is the result of doing a 'coloreido' ie dropping the cache container while standing at the top of a rather steep hill. Fortunately, the one I dropped only went about 40ft down instead of the almost 600ft!!!!!

The cache is located in Arctic Valley above the ski chalet and up the ridge from the abandoned Nike missile sight. Spectacular views of Sleeping Lady, Denali, the vintage Nike missile site, Highland Valley and all the peaks to the north can be had from the cache

We had spent over an hour looking for the perfect 'insanity' hide and thought we had found one but fortunately for you all...it did not work out!!! So we settled on a spot for a 'normal' cache hide and when I was moving down to make the placement I dropped the cache. I watched it begin to tumble down and all I could think is, I hope it doesnt go as far as the one coloreido dropped! Had mine been an ammo can I think it would have! When I began to move down to make the retrieval I found this cache location. So dropping the cache was a good thing because it helped me find this placement.

The cache is accessible from the Glenn Highway after exiting onto Arctic Valley Road. Proceed to the end of the road which ends at the Arctic Valley Ski Area. There is a $5 parking fee that is unique to this location. Your State Park permits do not apply. The gate closes at 10pm so keep this in mind when planning your trip!! Be sure and stop in at the Rendezvous Cafe for a cup of coffee, a snack and some pleasant conversation.

The cache can be found by taking many different routes. I would suggest going all the way up to the pass and finding GC14Q2M Arctic Valley Pass, then grabbing GCPYK4 Oh My Darlin' Clementine, then up the ridge to GC14Q2J Mount Gordon Lyon and then down the ridge toward the Nike site and to 519's Turn.

The cache is very near a Corp of Engineers Department of the Army Triangulation Station named URANUS and dated 1958. I have not found it to be loggable.

The cache is a yellow watertight cell phone dry box that measures 6 in x 1-5/8 in x 3 in. The cache is packed with a few items you might need along the trail.

The cache is placed under Chugach State Park Permit #12-004.

This is not a difficult hike and it is worth the effort. The views are spectacular year round. Come and enjoy all the flora earlier in the summer and the berry picking in season is great too!!!

CONGRATS TO LI1GRAY ON THE FTF!!!!
