Hole in One (read guidelines before searching) Traditional Cache
Sagefox: Will let this one go. It was a good theme but without a post with a good sized hole it just would not be the same.

Nuttall's Larkspur (delphinium family) is another threatened native wild flower in this area. Various techniques are currently being used to control the area and preserve the original native plants.
From the Washington State DNR:
"Controlled burns at the Rocky Prairie NAP help promote the growth of native prairie plants and reduce thatch and shrubs in this rare grassland ecosystem. These planned burns are part of a regional effort to restore native prairies and oak woodlands in western Washington and to enhance habitat for rare plant and wildlife species. The burns move quickly through the grasses and shrubs, leaving roots and bulbs unharmed. DNR also uses the burns as an opportunity to learn more about restoring and maintaining native prairie habitat.
"Historically wildfire was part of this ecosystem; it has played an important role in prairies and oak woodlands in the Puget Sound lowlands for centuries Native Americans burned the prairies to keep them from being shaded and closed in by forests and to stimulate growth of some native food plants."

This is the fourth of six caches (5 traditionals and 1 earthcache) placed in the West Rocky Prairie area of the Mima Mounds, with permission from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Here are the regulations for visiting this very fragile area:
1. Stay on roadways. (The caches I have placed in the area may be a few feet off the roadway; however, each cache location has been approved by a staff person.)
2. Foot traffic only. No bikes, horses or motor vehicles. Strollers would be acceptable.
3. Dogs must be on a short leash and kept on the roadways at all times. It might be easier to leave them home.
Following these regulations will preserve the natural environment while still allowing the public to enjoy it.
Even one single short walk off the roadways will cause soil compaction. Compaction prevents the natural plant life from growing and allows hardier, invasive species to take their place.
Let's keep this area open for all to enjoy now and in the future by honoring these requests.
Don't forget your Discover Pass.
