This is a series of multi-caches that I intend to place around the rural churches of North Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall start off with a few and hope to add to the series as I go along.
All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult - I would prefer you to find the caches - or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church.
This is the second in the series and starts at the Church of St. Cadocs in the very attractive village of Llangattock Lingoed. The current building has been here since the 12th century at least with other buildings on the site prior to this. The stonework has been rendered and lime-washed for the majority of this time and was restored in 2003 so the exterior looks like it probably has for the last 600 years or so!
There are many interesting aspects of this church too numerous to go into now, but it is well-worth looking into when you have time (have a look for the skeleton found in the south wall in 2003 too!) However one of the undoubted highlights is the intricately carved Bressumer Beam which stretches 20 feet across the nave and is all that remains of the medieval screen - well worth a look.
To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answer to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom.
So here we go. All the answers are to be found on the building itself.
There are eleven windows in the tower but how many of them are the small single windows? A
Move round to the porch, how many vertical wooden braces are there on the main door? B
Whilst in the porch look up and you will see grid-worked wood on the ceiling. But how many white rectangles and squares are there? Divide this number by 4. Your answer is C.
How many windows in the porch? D
To the right of the porch is a gravelled patch and just to the right of that is a distinctive gravestone in black with a cross on top (for John and Ann Davies). In the centre of the cross there are letters but how many? E
Now head to the far end of the church (the end further from the tower) How many panels are there in the window? F
So replace your answers in this co-ord and off you go to get the cache! Final position N 51° BD.B(C+E)(A+D) W 002° (D+E)B.FFA
The cache itself is a small, round tub with just about enough room for a couple of trackables or swaps.
