Cornerstones Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

BubbyC: Unfortunately construction in this corridor does not look like it will be ending any time soon, and art restoration and reinstallation will undoubtedly be one of the final steps at the end. So sadly I must archive this with the hopes that some day a new cache (or caches) might be able to bring people to this interesting but often overlooked art.

Geocache Description:

Eastlake is not a neighborhood known for its hipness, but it has a sizable collection of street art that rarely gets its due.  This easy multi-cache focuses on one of those art installations, while taking you past several others. The total walk is approximately one mile round-trip, the terrain is generally flat and well-maintained, and is entirely wheelchair accessible (Handicacher rating: H41211).

In 1997, artist Stacy Levy installed "Cornerstones", a series of nearly three dozen sandstone, lithochrome paint and cast glass sculptures in street intersections in the Eastlake neighborhood, as part of the city's 1% for Art program following a Seattle Public Utilities sewer and drainage project. Hundreds of people walk over them each day, but few give them more than a passing glance. If you are interested, there are many additional installations in this series beyond the scope of this multi-cache, ranging all the way from the University Bridge to the intersection of Eastlake Ave N and Fairview Ave N. See the related web page or the this photo for examples of what these stones look like.

All necessary information is readily available on the artwork (look down!), and aside from crossing the streets at marked intersections, there is no need to venture off the sidewalk. In case of confusion or ambiguity, always read the words on the artwork from left-to-right and counter-clockwise around corners. For any waypoints where you are instructed to read or count words, only the portion carved in the sandstone is relevant – ignore the glass street names and other ancillary material.

For ease of presentation, the waypoints are shown here from south to north, but they can be done in any order. If your GPS is pointing to the middle of the street at any waypoint, check the hints for some added guidance.

Finally, a few words of caution: If driving, please be careful to obey all posted signs, as parking enforcement is robust and cars are regularly towed. Please use stealth when searching for the final, and re-hide exactly as found. Feel free to post photos of your walk, but no spoilers of the ten installations featured in the cache!
