Fort Yamhill State Herritage Area is a day use park, just off Highway 22 on the route to Hebo. It is a quiet peacefull park with a handicap accessable trail. This is not a fee park and it is open year round. This cache is placed with OPRD staff permission and is availabe during normal park hours.
Fort Yamhill construction was started in the fall of 1856 by the U.S. Army under the command of 2nd Lt. William Hazen. The following spring 2nd Lt. Phil Sheridan completed the construction of 24 buildings using Native American laborers and civilian carpenters, masons and painters. 2nd. Lt. Sheridan went on to serve in the Civil War and is best known for his campaign in the Shenandoah. He finished his career as General Sheridan in 1888. The nearby town of Sheridan, Oregon is named in General Sheridan’s honor.
The fort was occupied from 1856 to 1861 by U.S. Army Fourth Regiment Infantry and then by Company D of the fourth California Infantry. The purpose of the fort was to be a buffer between the Native American Tribes on the Grand Ronde Reservation and the white settlers pouring into the new state of Oregon. The fort was abandoned and the buildings auctioned off in 1866. Most of the buildings were disassembled or moved and the environment reclaimed the land. In 1971 the land was listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department acquired the site in 1988 and opened the State Heritage Area in 2006.
