Geocache Description:

Here is another entry in my series of hides near fire lookouts.  This is Big Rock Lookout, 6020', in the Malheur National Forest.

Established in the mid-1930s, the site was likely little more than a secondary, emergency lookout post, a supplement to the nearby Lake Butte Lookout.  Panoramic photos were taken here on September 18, 1935.  In it, you can clearly see the field telephone, a fence enclosure, and the photo operator's vehicle.  The site was likely abandoned in the 1940s.

You'll need to park and walk to this one, just over 1/2 mile from the listed parking coordinates to the top, with an elevation gain of just over 350'.  As you attempt to follow the closed former road to the top (FS Road 364), look up 15 - 20' in the larger trees and you might see the brown ceramic insulators which held up the phone line which served the site.  I was able to locate 3 of them along the route.  I suspect many others have disappeared over time due to logging, target shooting and 'collectors'.  Please leave those you see in place so that future generations can discover them.  Other than relics of the forest phone system, I didn't find much else for evidence at the top.

You're looking for a clear, plastic Gladware container.
