Geocache Description:

This is a kid-friendly, fairly easy Geocache placed on private property designed to share both the beauty and history of Prospect Point. Please park in the parking lot next to Rt. 28 near the office and walk to the coordinates. Please take a quick look at all the waypoints we’ve included in this listing. For example, about 40 feet to the west of the cache you’ll find an original survey marker placed in 1892 by Verplanck Colvin, who played a critical role in the creation of the Adirondack Park.

In addition to the survey marker, this location has some amazing history. In 1880, Prospect Point was the site of the Prospect House, a ~300 room hotel built by Thomas Durant which was the only hotel in the world with electricity in all 300 rooms. The Hotel was wired by Thomas Edison himself! There are several waypoints included in this listing of significance, including a Wigwam, a cornerstone of the original Prospect House, and the Prospect Room. Today, Prospect Point Cottages is located on the property. We have been long-time guests here every summer, creating beautiful memories and history of our own. In fact, I proposed to my lovely wife at the top of Blue Mountain in the fall of 1997 (there is a geocache at the top of the mountain and several on the trail up as well). We hope you enjoy this geocache! Please post some photos too!
