Geocache Description:

This GeoCache will take to you to a spot of historical value in New Castle, PA.  This magnetic micro is placed at the site of the Capitol Theater where Bob Hope launched his solo career. The site is muggle-heavy and will require stealth at times. BYOP!

In the 1920's Bob Hope performed vaudville acts with various partners and eventually teamed up with fellow comedian George Byrne where they developed a vaudvillian blackface act.  Hope and Byrne landed in New York City where they were chosen for a Broadway show called "Sidewalks of New York".  The show was successful, but the team of Hope and Byrne were not and they soon set off Westward to re-work their act.

The team secured a 3-night date for $50 each at the 700 seat Capitol Theater in New Castle, PA.  The act performed in Marshall Walker's Whiz Bang Review where Hope was asked to introduce the theater's coming attractions as a favor to the theater manager.  The audience loved Hope's ad-libbed wisecracks. Encouraged by their response he extended his coming attractions monologue to 5-minutes and made the decision to dump Byrne... becoming Bob Hope, the solo act.

The Capitol Theater stood on this site until 1938 where it hosted motions pictures, vaudville acts, and stars of the early 20th century, including Al Jolsen.  The Capitol Theater was destroyed by fire and now serves as a municipal parking lot.
