Geocache Description:

This is a small cache placed close to the All Saints Church in Croydon, Cambridgshire.

This particular location has significance to me and although I reside in the Essex / London borders I am regularly in this area and this seemed the most appropriate place to locate my second cache.

This small village in Cambridgeshire has links with my family back all the way back to the 1870's when my great, great, great Grandfather was the landlord of the local pub which is still trading today. The story goes that he was killed by a customer, in a pub fight sometime between 1870 and 1885, and that the person responsible was convicted of Manslaughter (or the equivalent offence back then) and was then exiled to Australia or one of the other colonies. His wife ws unable to keep the pub, although it was a frowned upon for a female to own a pub back then, and eventually the pub was sold. The family then moved into the village and in 1904 my great Grandfather A.A. Jarman was born and resided at no. 7 Croydon and is shown living here in the 1911 census. He lived here until he was 12 when having left school he cycled down to London and settled in Hornsey. Later in life he moved to Steeple Morden and lived there until he passed away about 18 years ago at the age of 90.

I have chosen the churchyard as it is believed that the somewhere within the grounds lay the twin brothers of my great Grandfather who sadly passed away a short time after birth and were laid to rest by the family in unmarked graves in the churchyard. Apparently this happened sometime around 1911 although without my Great Grandfather to confirm this story i am not sure whether this is the truth or has been slightly altered over time! My father remembers going to the chuch in the late 1950's or early 1960's and remembers that the church was derelict, luckily now it has been restored and more info can be found about it at www.druidic.org/camchurch/churches/croydon.htm

Anyway thanks for listening to my long family history rambling... I have placed a more unusual cache here and the coordinates took a time to settle down owing to limited coverage. Any problems with this, I will sort out when next in the area and please can you place back exactly where found.
