I frequently pass this location on the way to, or back from the office, and recently noticed a new addition – a fabulous mosaic sculpture of the R.M.S. Titanic. There is parking nearby, so I stopped and took a look.
It’s been created to launch the redevelopment of the L8 area of Liverpool, and is at the centenary of its maiden voyage in 1912, and subsequent tragic loss of life after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean.

RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage. She was built between 1910-11 in Belfast by Harland and Wolff shipyard, for the White Star Line, and carried 2234 people.
Titanic was one of the most luxurious passenger liners ever built. It had a gymnasium, libraries, swimming pools and high class restaurants. Her design was leading edge with many advanced safety features including watertight compartments, but she had insufficient lifeboats for all on board – just room for 1178 people, that is only half of those she carried. This hadn’t been thought to be an issue as it was claimed the Titanic was unsinkable.
Her maiden voyage left Southampton on 10th April 1912 and called at both Cherbourg and Queenstown (now Cobh in Ireland) before heading out across the Atlantic. Four days later, when about 375 miles south of Newfoundland she hit an iceberg breaching five of her 16 compartments on her starboard side. Lifeboats were launched, but many were only partly filled. Within four hours she had sunk with the loss of 1514 lives. The 710 survivors were later picked up by RMS Carpathia who responded to her distress calls.
In 1985, the wreck of the Titanic was located on the Atlantic Ocean seabed, at a depth of over 12,000 feet and numerous artifacts have since been recovered. This then led to the blockbuster film starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslett, and earlier this year the many events to commemorate her maiden voyage and tragic loss.

Have a look at this fabulous mosaic, then around the mosaics plinth you will find 5 words (with 3, 4, 7, 9 & 11 letters). You need to count letters in these words. ‘T’ are the total number of letter T’s in these 5 word, ‘E’ the total number of E’s etc.
The cache container can then be found at N 53° 23.(T+E)WD W 002° 58.(N+S)(O+R)M.
Being a micro tube there is no pencil, so please remember to bring your own.
Finally, please take care if you have geo-kids or a geo-dog with you as the roads around here can be very busy.
