Geocache Description:

This regular sized cache is hidden on the appropriately named Panorama Trail in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve outside Stellenbosch. The hike to the cache is moderately strenuous, but worth the effort!

Getting There:
Make your way to the main gate at waypoint GATE. Here you'll have to pay for a permit to the reserve or present your Wild Card to get a permit. Mention that you'll be hiking Panorama trail.

Take the circular road once you're through the gate and make your way to the parking in the vicinity of waypoint PK.

NOTE that the reserve is open between 07h30 and 17h00 daily.


The Trail:
Panorama hiking trail is between 12km and 17km long, depending on which route you hike. The shortest route will take about 5 - 6 hours to complete and you'll ascend about 1000m. The trail is very well defined. In winter there are many streams where you'll find fresh water, in summer you'll have to carry enough water for the entire route.

If you prefer not to hike the entire trail, then it's possible to hike to the cache by taking the route to "Eerste waterval" and "Tweede waterval" and head up via Kurktrekkersnek to the cache. This is still a long route and will take probably around 3.5 to 4.5 hours to complete (we haven't done it ourselves). Having said that, we highly recommend doing the entire route.

The weather here can change very quickly, especially in winter, so always be prepared for extremes and take enough food and water with you.


The Cache:
The cache is a regular size container hidden on a rocky outcrop with a view down the Jonkershoek valley. The cache is easiest found if you drop down a level from the rocky outcrop and stand with your back to the valley while looking between the rocks in front of you.

The cache contains a geocaching 'readme' note, a logbook & pen and the usual assortment of trinkets.
