Geocache Description:

Just a small film canister cache at a strange little seemingly forgotten neighborhood park which was once part of the lawn of the Highland Pines Inn, which burned in 1957.

This is another in a series of caches celebrating the Moore County that used to be!! If you know of any good candidates for the No Longer There Series, the more, the merrier!! The Highland Pines Inn was another of the grand hotels of Moore County. This one was built on E. Massachusetts Ave. in 1912. It was a first-class place with 110 rooms, tennis courts and riding stables. The Boyd family donated 8 acres and invested $60,000 in the building. The hotel had a fine reputation and its own orchestra for a time. After World War II, the hotel was rented by the US military, and from 1951 to 1957, military officers from all over the country attended classes at the United States Air Force Ground School there. On January 20, 1957, the hotel was destroyed in a fire that was thought to be the result of faulty wiring. There were 20 people in the building at the time and they were evacuated with no injuries. Today, nothing remains of the place except a few nieghborhood houses which once served as guest suites as well as some old postcards and memories.
