Dieser Earthcache führt Euch in das landshaftlich reizvolle Schwarzwassertal zu einer Doline.
This earthcache will guide you to a doline in the beautiful "Schwarzwassertal".

Meist fällt es einem Spaziergänger gar nicht auf – Dellen in der Landschaft, große und kleine Hohlformen an der Oberfläche, oder Bäche, in denen kein Wasser fließt!
Wenige Meter neben dem wunderschönen Wanderweg in Richtung Melköde und Schwarzwasserhütte liegen all diese seltsamen Erscheinungen, die typisch für Verkarstungsprozesse sind.
Doline im Schwarzwassertal An den Koordinaten findet ihr sogenannte Dolinen. Dolinen sind trichterförmige Hohlräume in kalkhaltigem Gestein. Sie entstehen durch Lösungsprozesse im Kontakt mit kohlensäurehaltigem Wasser. Dabei löst die Kohlensäure (H2CO3) das Kalkgestein, das vor allem Kalziumcarbonat (CaCO3) enthält, in seine Bestandteile auf, die dann vom Niederschlag oder von Bächen rasch abtransportiert werden.
Hier, in den nördlichen Kalkalpen, könnten wir sehr häufig Verkarstungsformen beobachten, da die Voraussetzungen günstig sind: Kalkgestein aus den organischen Ablagerungen und Sedimenten früherer Meere aus dem Erdmittelalter und große Mengen Niederschlag im humiden Klima der gemäßigten Breiten sind ideale Bedingungen für die Verkarstungsformen Dolinen, Runsen, Rinnen, Trockentäler und Höhlen.

Aber nun zurück zur Doline:
Dolinen können sehr unterschiedliche Größen von wenigen Zentimetern bis hin zu Hunderten von Metern annehmen. Meist sind sie rund, wenn sich aber mehrere vereinigen, dann entstehen auch wannenförmige Dolinen, auch Uvalas genannt. Dolinen werden in zwei Gruppen unterteilt:
Lösungsdolinen entstehen meist durch eine zunächst natürliche Delle, in der sich das Wasser verstärkt sammelt und daher die Verkarstung rascher voranschreitet. Das ist ein sich selbst verstärkender Prozess, denn dadurch wird die Delle noch tiefer und noch mehr Wasser kann sich dort sammeln und an den Wänden der entstehenden Doline herunterrinnen. Der Prozess stoppt oder verlangsamt sich häufig dann, wenn die restlichen Bestandteile des kalkhaltigen Gesteins, die nicht so leicht löslich sind, z.B. Tone, sich am Grund sammeln und dann eine Sperrschicht bilden, die das Regenwasser nicht mehr direkt das Kalkgestein heranlässt.
Einsturzdolinen hingegen zeugen von einer kalkhaltigen Schicht in tieferen Lagen unter der Oberfläche, die sich durch die Kohlensäure im Sicker- oder Grundwasser langsam höhlenartig auflöst und die darüberliegende Deckschicht, die nichteinmal aus Kalkgestein sein muss – nachbricht und „einstürzt“.

Jetzt habe ich ein paar Fragen an Euch:
1. Wieviele Dolinen könnt Ihr auf dieser Lichtung erkennen?
2. Schätzt die Tiefe der Doline, die dem Weg am Nächsten liegt!
3. Die Doline ist stark bewachsen. Überlegt anhand der obigen Ausführungen, weshalb hier die Flora besonders gut gedeiht!

In general nobody realizes these unremarkable landforms besides the hiking-trail: little slacks, holes, and streambeds without water!
Only a few meters besides the beautiful hiking-trail in direction to the “Melköde” and “Schwarzwasserhütte” you can find all these interesting landforms, which are typical for the Karstformation.
At the coordinates you can see so-called “dolines”. Dolines are funnel-shaped sinkholes in calcareous rock. They develop throughout solubilizing processes of carbonic acid (H2CO3) in the water in contact with calcareous rock, which consists mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
Here, in the northern limestone alps we can see often the results of karst-processes, because the conditions are particularly favourable: big Limestone-layers resulting from sediments of a former sea in the mesozoic era and enormous house of waters from rain and phreatic water in the humid climate of the temperate zone at the northern side of the alps are perfect pre-conditions for forming dolines, cockpits, striations, caves and streamless valleys.

Back to the doline:
Dolines exist in very different sizes from a few inches to more than hundreds of meters. Usually they are round, but if a couple of dolines combine, they can appear in oval forms, so-called uvalas. There are two types of dolines:
Solubilizing dolines are in the initial stage just a natural little dent on the ground. In this dent flows consequently more rainwater than in the surrounding parts. That’s why the dent suspends and grows faster than the other parts of the rock. It is a self-energizing process: the bigger the hole, the faster the karst-formation. The process stopps or slows down, when on the ground of the sinkhole develop layers of silt and residual tones, the remaining parts of the limestone, which are not suspended from the water. This layer keeps the carbonic acid apart from the rock.
The collapse doline is a result of deeper layers of limestone, which solubilizes subsurface. When the cave in the underground is big enough, the surface collapses and a hole arises.

These are my questions to you:
1. How many dolines do you count in this clearance?
2. Estimate: How deep is the doline next to the hiking-trail?
3. The ground of the doline ist heaviliy vegetated. Try to explain this fact using the informations above!
