Geocache Description:

A multi-puzzle around the village of Kirmington, taking you on a journey through a varied mix of history, aviation and agriculture. There's a big cache box to be found, and a clue to help find a bonus reward cache too.

A walk around the village will cover about 2 miles, but you might also wish to extend the walk and take a few detours along the way to visit other nearby caches at the same time.

First, a little history

If you don't want a history lesson, skip to the cache

Kirmington, now a rural agricultural village, played a significant role for the RAF during WWII as a base for Lancaster and Wellington bombers.

The village and nearby area was peppered with buildings during the war years - a dispersed camp spread wide to minimise risk of damage during attack.

Many of the barracks and blast shelters remain to this day, now hidden in small areas of woodland surrounding the airfield.

The northern wall of St Helen's church holds an unexpected surprise - a stained glass memorial window.

The detail on the window is very intricate

The Cache

To find the cache, you need to take the CO's usual lunch-time wander around Kirmington, visiting a few places to answer questions and collect clues. Some of the questions relate to Kirmington's history; some are just plain silliness.

Kirmington is a quiet rural village so no torch-light night-caching please.

The best parking is anywhere along Main Street / High Street - near the school, the church, or the local beverage-purveyor (which is a great place to find some more history hanging on the walls).

You can tackle the questions in any order you like, but you might also wish to hunt for other local caches nearby.

A) N 53° 35.269′ W 000° 20.092′

This gothic looking old building looks very ecclesiastical, with the cross motif on the gables. Old maps show it was once a Methodist Chapel, but it is now a private residence. What year was it built?

How many large arched windows face the road from the front of the building?

Add these together for answer A
Check: The digits of your answer A added together should make 26.

B) N 53° 35.376′ W 000° 20.079′

No need to search. Just stand still and have a look around. Answer "B" is plain to see. This is no 'Nutty' nano, but it's on a very 'Nutty' object.

C) N 53° 35.143′ W 000° 20.259′

This junction is about 12.192 metres wide, but how many feet are there on six horses, three sheep and a two-headed llama? Did you really need to visit this location to find out? Possibly not, but if farmyard maths isn't your strong point then just look around - there's a clue nearby.

D) N 53° 35.126′ W 000° 20.248′

Deja vu? "D" is in your view.

E) N 53° 35.129′ W 000° 19.951′

Who's watching from the window?

--- 1 --- Tom and Jerry
--- 2 --- Yogi and Booboo Frett
--- 3 --- Wallace and Gromit

F) N 53° 35.248′ W 000° 19.667′

These long concrete Orlet huts were once Airwomens' Quarters for the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. There's some evidence these huts were later used as accommodation for prisoners of war. As Kirmington returned to agriculture, these then became accommodation for pigs. Sadly they now seem to be turning into accommodation for fly tipping.

How many of these 60-foot long Orlet huts remain standing at this location?

G) N 53° 35.215′ W 000° 19.861′

Here you'll find a memorial remembering Kirmington's villagers lost to WWI and WWII. How many names are honoured on the upper and lower plaques, altogether?

How many bands of carved flowers encircle the cross?

Look on top of the church. Which vane character is telling the weather?

--- 1 --- The badger
--- 2 --- The fox
--- 3 --- The hound
--- 4 --- The cockerel
--- 5 --- The hippopotamus

What colour is the church's clock face?
--- 1 --- Silver
--- 2 --- Black
--- 3 --- White
--- 4 --- Turquoise

Add these answers all together for answer G.
Check: The digits of your answer G added together should make 6.

H) N 53° 35.231′ W 000° 19.894′

This building, now private residences, used to be an old school-house. What year is over the door?

I) N 53° 35.237′ W 000° 19.920′

Several squadrons were involved with RAF Kirmington, but which squadron number is the plaque dedicated to?

According to the plaque, how many gave their lives that we may be free?

At the top of the plaque is the motif of the squadron. Underneath the canine is a motto. The first three letters of this single word slogan give you a number.

How many blades remain on the nearby propeller?

Add all of these numbers together to make answer "I"
Check: The digits of your answer added together should make 18.

J) N 53° 35.192′ W 000° 20.033′

You don't need a clue. "J" equals ?

Once you have the answers from all the questions, substitute your answers below to calculate the coordinates:

N 53° 35 . ( A - H ) ( B + E + F ) ( J + B + D )
W 000° ( G + D - B - J - F ) . ( I + F - ( ( C + J ) × ( E + D ) ) )

Please be stealthy retrieving the cache.
