Glowing eyes in the dark and things that go bump in the night are just some of the things which you may have to contend with here. Can you control your night terrors for long enough to get your hands on the prize?
Your pursuit of this night cache will take you on a stroll around a very quiet neighborhood. If you are lucky, the residents should be all resting peacefully. Please do not do anything to alter this.
Rouse them at your peril.
However as you follow the trail you will pass by more than a few graves which are open. Have the occupants left, or are they just waiting to drag you back in?
The Location: This night trail takes in quite a large portion of the older sections of the cemetery, so please treat the area with the respect that it deserves. It has been set out with the knowledge and approval of the Wellington City Council cemetery staff to whom I am very grateful for their assistance.
I have deliberately kept the trail as much away from the neighboring houses as possible in order to minimize any impact on them. Please also do your part by not shining lights into or at these residences.
The old graves are potentially very unstable and there is a very real risk of damage or personal injury if they are not treated with care and respect. Therefore:
- Please ensure that you do not walk, climb, lean on, or take out any other actions that may negatively impact on them.
- The trail has been laid out in such a way that there is no need to take shortcuts across any of the graves. If you find yourself on the wrong track, please either backtrack or continue to the next access way as appropriate.
Parking: To prevent either having your vehicle locked in, or the security guard having to track you down before they lock the gate, please park outside of the cemetery while you pursue the cache. The coordinates I have given are a very short stroll from the start point
The Hunt: From the parking coordinates you can expect to walk a total of around 3km for the round trip. You will be traveling on a combination of roadway, grass lanes and formed pathways although they may not necessarily be in a well maintained state. You may also have to contend with creek crossings and narrow sections with steep drop offs. In daylight the trip would probably rate a terrain 3. Given that you will be doing it in the dark I have increased this to a rating of 3.5.
If you haven't already guessed, you will be looking for a trail of firetacks - around 56 in total. Additionally the cemetery is full of things that also will shine back, so you will need to be wary of red herrings. Most of the tacks should be easy to spot but some may take a bit more effort. The next tack in the sequence may not always be visible from the previous, so on occasion you will have to trust your instinct and continue on into the night. In general, if you are at an intersection and a turn is required, you should be able to see which way to go.
You will be near the end when you get to the location marked with two firetacks. Standing at the man-made object nearby, you may well feel that you are being watched. Locate the eyes and they will lead you to the cache.
The Corpse Cache is not in a shallow grave but is well covered. Please leave it this way when you leave.
Bring your own pencil and please do not leave trackables or swaps in the hide.
