This site, named Karvonen, is owned by the Alberta Conservation Association. The land is accessible by foot only. The week these caches were placed there was a tree planting crew present who were planting White Spruce in an effort to give the conifer phase of forest growth a big of a jump start.
Mini R & BigR were itching for an adventure while spending the lazy days of summer at the cabin on Skeleton Lake. While out looking for somewhere to place a mini power trail we bumped into the Karvonen site owned by the ACA. What a treat to find so close to home. As mentioned above, it was being tree-planted when we visited which worked out great for us as the crew leaders were very helpful in helping us find our way around the land. Thankfully the quad they were using to deliver trees to the planters helped us find our way through the mostly visited landscape.
The land in this area is varied and although parts of your adventure may be on a "trail" most of your day will be spent exploring and choosing your own adventure. There is a small lake on the NE portion of the land. We were able to get close but not completely on shore as the water levels were very high and the shoreline was quite swampy.
Mini R was 6 years old when we placed these caches and was able to handle the hiking well. This off trail hiking won't be for everyone but if you are looking for an adventure where few others have been then this area is for you. Access to the land is easiest from either the north or south end. At the north end it feels like you are heading into a private yard however you are on a road allowance and a gate quickly appears on your right…parking is probably easiest on the range road just before the road allowance. On the south end the access is quite obvious. The cache container is a matchstick container in a fairly easy location to find. This isn't about the hunt for the container but the experience of getting to GZ.
This is the only "drive up" cache of the bunch. I'm guessing that this cache will have many more visitors than "Bull Shark Pond" over the coming years...
Happy Caching,
BigR & Mini R
