Soujiji Temple is one of two head temples (Dai Honzan) of Soutou Zen training temples. The other one is also well known Eiheiji Temple at Fukui prefecture. All the young Zen ascetic monks over Japan comes either of here or Eiheiji to train Zen.
Originally Soujiji is established in Ishikawa prefecture in 1322, but in 1898, they lost almost all part of the temple by fire. So they decided to move to here Tsurumi in 1907, and finished moving in 1912. I'm glad to hide this cache in the 100th anniversary year of Tsurumi Soujiji (the centennial festival will be held during Nov. 1-5, 2012).
The temple is so famous that many people comes for sightseeing to here. But many people don't know here's such a big temple with its area of 500,000 sq. meters (like studium or amusement park) at Yokohama City. This cache will guide you inside the temple.
- Visiting in daytime is recommended. Please note that the park and many facilities are closed or secured after evening (almost 5 PM), however Soujiji is too big to close whole the area.
- The backside half of the Soujiji area is grave site, and no virtual/physical cache is at. You may know there're graves of many famous politicians/actors/artists, and usually temples/grave areas are open to someone who are respecting departed people to visit & pray. Please be good mannered if you do so.
- Also Zen monks will guide you for Soujiji tour (paid, 5 times a day).
Stage 1 (phone booth):
Go to N 35° 30.295 E 139° 40.474: there's an old style telephone box. You can see both modern phone and old phone there. The telephone has registration number. Let it be (A)(B)(C)(D)(E) (now (x)(y)(z) stands for three continuous single digit numbers "xyz").
You'll walk up a slope surrounded by trees, then entering two big main gates Sanshoukan and Sammon.
Stage 2 (bodhisattva):
Go to N 35° 30.(A+2)(B-1)(C) E 139° 40.(A+2)(B-1)(E): You can see a statue of bodhisattva made by bronze. The bodhisattva is built for memorial service of aborted fetus. Count the number of children around the bodhisattva. Let it be F (only bronze made; stone/ceramic made statue or Pikachu to be excluded).
Around there you can see beautiful gate Kinkeimon (usually closed) and a huge Tourou light house made by stone from Mt. Chokai (between Yamagata & Akita).
Stage 3 (treasure hall):
Go To N 35° 30.335 E 139° 40.216: Here's one of halls gathering treasures which had been used by Buddhism ceremony. Sometimes the temple opens for visitors to observe them (paid). Let the number of steps in front of the entrance be G.
Now you cross long corridor between Zen training halls - sometimes the training monks are walking there, using the lore of Buddhism "silent, hurry up but don't be rush."
Stage 4 (Tennou memorial):
Go to N 35° 30.460 E 139° 40.172: this is the backside of Tennou memorial hall (usually closed). The facility enshrines several Tennou (not graves) including Godaigo Tennou who have approved Soujiji as "governmental" temple in 1322. Here to N 35° 30.469 E 139° 40.194, there're several round stone, which seems to symbolize the universe in Zen (and they say there're several layers of several universe in Buddhism). Step on it and count (only round stone). Let it be H.
One Zen master had ever said that step stones are enough if there are only parts of footprints of walker. But if so, one cannot walk. So there's nothing in vain in this world.
Stage 5 (big hall):
Go to N 35° 30.(H x 9) E 139° 40.((H x 5) + B): You're now in front of one of the big halls like gym - they can hold big ceremony inside these halls. On the level you're standing, the path consists of approx. 2x3 feet stone panels. Chase the very center line through the center of the hall. How many that size of panels on your level? Let it be J.
When you finish gathering numbers, calculate:
X = F x G x 8 + D + 12
Y = H x J / π + π (where π is the circumference ratio)
Round X, Y be 3 digit integer numbers (if less than 100, supply leading zero).

6ステップのマルチキャッシュです。ステップ1～5 (バーチャル) で数を集め (徒歩で1時間・3kmほどです)、ファイナルの座標を計算してください。
総持寺 (正式名称は諸嶽山總持寺) は、曹洞宗の二つある大本山のうちのひとつです。もうひとつもまた、福井永平寺としてよく知られています。曹洞宗の修行僧はここか永平寺で修行を積むことになります。
総持寺は元々、能登半島の櫛比庄 (くしひのしょう、現在の石川県) に1322年に開創されました。しかし1898年に火事で多くの部分が焼失し、1907年にここ鶴見山に移転を開始、1912年に移転を終了しました。鶴見総持寺100周年の今年にこのキャッシュを設置できるのは光栄です (100周年記念法要は2012年11月1～4日に執り行われる予定です)。
総持寺は大本山であるため、多数の人が観光に訪れます。しかしここ横浜の中心部に、遊園地やスタジアム並みの広大な十余万坪の敷地を擁する大本山があることを知らない人も多いようです。 このマルチキャッシュで総持寺の主要部分を巡りましょう。
- 各ポイントを巡るのは昼間をおすすめします。総持寺は巨大で、近隣住民の通路ともなっているためすべてが閉鎖されるわけではありませんが、駐車場やいくつかの部分は夕方5時をめどに閉鎖されます。
- 総持寺敷地の背面 (北側部分) は墓地です。ここにはバーチャルなステップ・ファイナルキャッシュともありません。著名な政治家・俳優・芸術家の墓があるのをご存じの方も多いでしょうが、もしお参りするならば礼節を持ってお願い致します。
- 禅僧による総持寺の紹介ツアーもあります (一日5回・有料)。
Stage 1 (電話ボックス):
N 35° 30.295 E 139° 40.474に行ってください。古い電話ボックスがあります。新しい公衆電話の他に古い公衆電話も置いてあります。この電話機は登録番号 (5桁) があります。これを (A)(B)(C)(D)(E) とします (ただし (x)(y)(z) という表記は、3つの1桁の整数が連続していることを示します)。
木々に囲まれてゆるい坂道を登ると、二つの大きな門、三松関と三門をくぐり、いよいよ境内です。
Stage 2 (菩薩観音):
N 35° 30.(A+2)(B-1)(C) E 139° 40.(A+2)(B-1)(E) に行ってください。青銅の菩薩像があります。水子の霊を鎮めているようです。この回りに子供の像はいくつあるでしょうか。これをFとします (青銅製のものだけを数えてください。石仏や瀬戸物の像、ぴかちゅうは含みません)。
この付近からは美しい金鶏門 (普段は閉じているようです) や、鳥海山の石で作られた巨大な灯籠がみえます。
Stage 3 (寶物殿):
N 35° 30.335 E 139° 40.216 に行ってください。仏事に使われる由緒ある宝物を集めた宝物殿のひとつがあります。ここはときどき、有料で公開されることがあります。入口の階段は何段でしょうか。これをGとします。
禅僧の修行に使われる幾つかの建物を結ぶ、長い廊下を渡りましょう。ときどき、修行僧が仏教の教え『静かに、急いで、慌てず』に従って通るのをみることができます。
Stage 4 (御霊殿):
N 35° 30.460 E 139° 40.172に行ってください。ここは幾代かの天皇を祀った (墓ではありません) 建物です (通常は閉まっています)。1322年に総持寺を官寺と認めた後醍醐天皇などが祀られています。ここから N 35° 30.469 E 139° 40.194 までの間に、円形の踏み石があります。禅で宇宙を表わす円 (そして仏教では宇宙はいくつかのまとまりが何階層かあります) なのでしょうか。この数をHとします。
ある禅僧は、踏み石は足の裏の部分だけあればよさそうだが、それでは歩けない、したがって世の中に無駄なものなどないのだ、と宣ったそうです。無駄なdescriptionなどもまた、ありません。
Stage 5 (大堂):
N 35° 30.(H x 9) E 139° 40.((H x 5) + B) に行って下さい。まるで体育館のように大きなお堂のひとつの前にいます。ここでは様々な儀式が執り行なわれます。あなたがいる高さの石畳は、約60cm x 1mくらいの石が敷き詰められて出来ています。一番中央の、お堂の中央を貫いている線に着目して下さい。その大きさの石いくつでできていますか? これを J とします。
数字を集め終わったら、下式を計算して下さい。

Y = H x J / π + π (ただし π は円周率)
X、Yを3桁の整数にして下さい (100未満の場合は先頭に0を補って下さい)。
