Washington Wildlife A-Z: G-Gray Wolf Traditional Cache
Washington Wildlife A-Z: G-Gray Wolf
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The State of Washington classifies the Gray Wolf as endangered throughout the whole state. Federally it is classified as endangered in the western two-thirds of the state. Between 1850 and 1900 wolves were killed at a high rate due to the expansion of farming and ranching in the state. They were no longer viable as a breeding species by the 1930s.
As of June 2012 there are seven confirmed packs of Gray Wolves in Washington. These packs are: Diamond - Pend Oreille County, Smackout - Stevens and Pend Oreille County, Salmo - Pend Oreille County, Teanaway - Kittitas County, Lookout - Okanogan County, Nc'icn - Colville Confederated Tribe Reservation and Huckleberry - Stevens County. There are five more suspected packs.
I'm very sad to say that the Wedge pack has been killed by WDFW.
If you want to experience solitude this is a good place. If you look across the road to the north you will see farmland owned by WSU. The cache is on Department of Natural Resource land, but it looks like someone is leasing it to farm. Please be extra careful during harvest and hunting season.
