An escarpment is a steep slope or long cliff that results from erosion or faulting and separates two relatively level areas of differing elevations. The Great Escarpment begins with the Kamiesberg range in the northwest, which becomes the Roggeveld Mountains towards the south, where it then veers towards the east as the Nuweveld, Sneeu, and Storm mountain ranges. This escarpment delineates where the plateau of the interior begins and forms South Africa’s most important watershed. Unfortunately the escarpment also prevents moist air from the sea reaching the interior plateau, which causes the semi-arid conditions and frequent droughts in the interior of the country.

Happy caching (and exploring)!
