Geocache Description:

A 1-1/3 mile hike and currently bushwack out an old overgrown skid into a hidden vale with some of the oldest trees in Oregon.

Formed by glaciers thousands of years ago the towering walls that surround Crabtree Valley have protected this forest from the natural cycle of wildfires and wind storms. The trees here are considered to be some of the oldest in the state. For the whole story follow this link http://projects.registerguard.com/web/sportsoutdoors/26926561-41/tree-trees-king-tut-valley.html.csp.

The roads are in good shape and except for the last mile could be done by car but that last mile is pretty rough so at least a pick-up or 4x4 should be used. Starting on Quartzville Road turn left onto S. Fork Packers Gulch/Yellowstone Road [N 44° 33.814, W 122° 24.706]. Following the asphalt at the next junction stay left. Go right at the next junction, following the asphalt. Now on the old Yellowstone Road, follow it all the way to the top were the asphalt ends. If you were to turn left here, you would end up at the tralhead to hike into Crabtree Lake as described in the directions for the CFM cache GCGN1T "The Cathedral". But turn right and follow the rest of the directions and you can park about 1/4 mile from the lake. After turning right at the end of the asphalt follow the road to the next junction and turn left. A short way down the road you will come to a Y. Stay left and follow the road down the hill. At the next junction turn left. At the next junction (Road 11-2e-14.1) turn left. Crabtree Creek is now down on your right. Follow this road a couple of miles to the next junction and turn left (Road 11-2e-4.1) and follow it to the paking coords. Starting from the parking coords take the old overgrown skid that angles off to the right. The trail starts off relatively clear but gets overgrown the farther out you get. The skid is obvious and well defined. Some bushwacking is required, all on the old skid, as I/nobody has been out here for a few years. Any help clearing trail will be welcome. A sharp pair of pruning shears or a machete would be enough as most of the larger stuff has been cleared. After about 1 1/4 miles you will come to a small tree with 3 Xs scratched into the bark. This is the end of the skid. From here turn right and make your way over to the creek (See Creek Crossing Waypoint). From here your on your own as the forest floor is relatively clear and no trail is needed. Cross the creek and staying to the higher ground, as to avoid the swamp in wetter mounths, follow your GPSr the last hundred yards or so to King Tut. Because of possible poor reception there is a spoiler photo as I would hate to see anyone come this far and not find the cache.
