The Summer Olympics began on July 27, 2012, in London and the Closing Ceremony was August 12, 2012. We created a series highlighting the Olympic sports. A new cache was released as the first medal was awarded in each sport. In these, you found a code for the Closing Ceremony cache. The first 26 cachers who logged the 26 sports, Opening, and Closing Ceremony caches won an Olympic prize. (9-26-12 all prize tickets have been claimed.)
At the end of each Olympiad is a celebration of the Games and the competition that has occured. During this ceremony, the medals for the marathon are awarded, recognizing it as one of the events that is tied to the Ancient Olympic Games. Unlike the Opening Ceremony, the athletes enter the stadium intermixed by sport and nationality, celebrating the spirit of friendly competition. There are 3 flags honored during this ceremony: The Greek flag recognizing the Ancient Games, the host country honoring their efforts in holding the Games, and the flag of the next host country. At the end, the President of the International Olympic Committee gives a speech, closes the games, extinguishes the flame that has burned throughout, and gives a special flag to the mayor of the next host city.
**THE CACHE IS NOT HIDDEN AT THE ABOVE COORDINATES **
The Closing Ceremony codes found in "Let the Games Begin"...Opening Ceremony, Aquatics, Archery, Cycling, Fencing, Judo, Shooting, Weightlifting, Gymnastics, Canoe/Kayak, Equestrian, Rowing, Table Tennis, Athletics, Badminton, Tennis, Triathlon, Sailing, Wrestling, Tae Kwon Do, Volleyball, Boxing, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Handball, and Modern Pentathlon caches can now be converted into the following phrase:
L O N D o n * S U M m E R @ O l Y M P I C # G A m e s
Inside the final cache, you will find a coupon telling you how to claim one of 26 special Olympic prizes. Anyone may log after these have been claimed, but there are only 26 prizes...(9-26-12 all prizes have been claimed). You MUST have logged all 27 previous caches to claim the final prize. Failure to do so will result in forfeit of any prize. Follow all regulations and hours for GZ.
Cache difficulty is based on the challenge of completing all the previous caches in the series to obtain the info for "Closing Ceremony".
We hope you have enjoyed the series and our first geocache hides. After this experience, we appeciate even more the effort it takes to hide caches and create a series. Many thanks to all those who have (or will) hide caches for us (and you) to find! A special thank you to the Cache Reviewers as well (in particular Tiki who helped us get this series published)!
Be careful on approaching GZ. There are some dips in the ground along the way. Wildlife, deer in particular, frequent the area.
The All-Around Gold Medalist and FTF goes to Hucks Hill on the day of publishing!!
2nd and the All-Around Silver goes to Boxman Crew!! (day of publishing)
3rd and the All-Around Bronze goes to ourfamluvscaching (and OFLC Thing 1 and OFLC Thing 2) after an impressive medaling explosion in the last 24 hours! (day of publishing)
