From 1867 up to 18 July 1969,at exactly 1.00pm each day, the 'One O'Clock Gun' overlookingthe River Mersey near Morpeth Dock, Birkenhead, would befired electrically from the Observatory at Bidston Hill. It was decided to discontinue the tradition of firing the One O'Clock Gun on the grounds of efficiency. The clock used for the firing of the One O'Clock Gun went to the Observatory (now known as the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory).
