The Summer Olympics begin on July 27, 2012, in London, England. In their honor, we have created a series of caches to highlight the Olympic sporting disciplines. We will release a new cache as the first medal is awarded in each discipline. In each cache, you will see a code for the Closing Ceremony cache. The first 26 cachers who log all 26 sporting, Opening, and Closing Ceremony caches will win a special Olympic prize.
Not to be mistaken with your average backyard fence, fencing is one of the sports featured in the Olympic games. It has been a part of every modern Olympic games for men and since the 1924 Olympics for women.
The sport of fencing is divided into three forms related to the types of weapons and location where competitors can score: foil, sabre and epee.
In foil, the goal of the competitors is to score points by using a light thrusting weapon. Competitors score points by touching the tip of their weapon to the other players torso (including the back). Touches to any other part of the body do not score and stop the action of the game. If both competitors touch at the same time, the referee uses "rules of right away" to determine who gets the point awarded.
In sabre, the target is expanded to the entire body above the waist. In addition, scores can be obtained by touching with the sides of the blade. Another difference from foil is that touches that miss the target area do not stop the game and the competitors continue to play. Rules of "right of way" remain to determine the scorer in the case of simultaneous touches.
The third form of fencing is epee. This weapon is heavier and competitors only score with the tips. The target area for epee is the entire body, excluding the back of the head and the hands. In epee, the right of way rules do not apply and both competitors can score on any point.
Competitors wear protective equiptment. Beginning with the 1936 Olympics, they started to replace human judging with electronic scoring apparatus triggered by sensors in the weapons.
