The Aquatic discipline is composed of four different sports: diving, swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo.
Diving has four events for both men and women. Individual events are 3m Springboard and 10m Platform. There is also synchronized diving (2 divers try to perform the same dive simultaneously) for 3m Springboard and 10m Platform. Each country may have two divers for each individual event and one pair for each synchronized dive. There are 136 athletes (68 men and 68 women) taking part in these Olympics. Diving has been an Olympic sport since 1904. Women's diving was added in 1912. Synchronized diving is fairly new, having been added in 2000. Divers must submit in advance what dives they will perform. Dives have a degree of difficulty that is multiplied by the judges' score (which can be a maximum of 10). Synchronized divers are judged on their execution and synchronization. All divers want to be vertical when entering the water and create as little splash as possible.
Perhaps one of the most popular Summer Olympic events , swimming has been a part of every Modern Olympic games. Women's swimming events were added in 1912. There are 16 mens and 16 womens events, two marathon swimming events, and 950 competitors. Each country may have 2 athletes in each individual event and one team for each relay. There are four strokes used in the Olympics: freestyle (crawl), backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. All four are used in individual events. The relays are freestyle and medley (all four strokes).
For interesting and amusing trivia about Olympic swimming, look up the story of the Men's Plunge for distance!!!! You'll quickly understand why it did not last long....
Synchronized swimming is one of two women's only Summer Olympic events. There are two events, Duet and Team competition. It became an Olympic event in 1984. Short routines are performed to music (which is also heard under water). The teams are judged on complexity, choreography and execution. Duets must perform a technical and free routine, where only the top 12 teams move on to perform another free routine. They then add the score from the final free to the technical preliminary routine to get their final score. Teams are judged on the combination of just one technical routine and one free routine. There are 104 athletes in this competition. Eight countries have athletes in both events and are limited to only nine athletes total. The remaining 16 countries have only two participants in the Duet competition.
Water polo is a team event similar to handball in the water. It has been a part of every Olympics since 1900. Women's water polo was added in 2000. Only two medals are awarded for this team sport (men and women). There are 156 men (12 teams) and 104 women (8 teams) set to enter the competition. Each country may only enter one team to each event. There are 13 players on a team but only 7 players may be in the pool at one time (6 players and 1 goalkeeper). Players are not allowed to touch the sides or bottom of the pool at any time. There are four 8 minute quarters and the offense has only 30 seconds to score a goal. Play begins with a race to the ball in the center. Some athletes may swim up to 3 miles during a game.
