The pied stilt is another species of bird that may be seen from cache position in Wanganui
Pied Stilt
A distinctive black and white wader with extremely long pinkish red legs and long fine black bill. Variable black on crown, nape and hindneck and collar. Eye red. Distinctive yapping calls often heard at night or when breeding
Habbit: Breeds on riverbeds, lake margins and damp pastures. Forms flocks at estuaries outside breeding season . Can be seen in Whanganui River Estuary
The cache can be found along the walkway along the bank of the Whanganui River. Many birds can be spotted along this esturary at different times of the year. This is a pleasant walk that can be enjoyed by the family at all times of the year. The pathway is suitable for biking, walking and dogs can enjoy the fresh air too. There are several caches along this walkway which can be found. The walkway stretches from the city to just past the yacht club.
