Cache placed close to Ardross Castle, with parking nearby. Lovely drive with great views on route to cache
Ardross lies 8km north-west of Alness, in the Averon valley. The largest concentration of dwellings are in the village of Dublin comprising about 30 houses and a church, so named as it was founded by Irish immigrant workers who built Ardross Castle. The Duke of Sutherland bought the 60,000-acre (240 km2) Ardross Estate in the late 18th century, and in 1845, sold it to Sir Alexander Ross for £90,000. The Castle incorporates an earlier house. It was designed by Alexander Ross for Alexander Matheson in 1880-81 and built of Tarradale Red Sandstone in the Scottish Baronial style. James Pulham and Son created the gardens at the Castle. At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle was the summer retreat of Charles Dyson Perrins, Director of the family firm of Lee and Perrins, makers of the famous Worcestershire Sauce. Perrins’ main home was in Malvern, Worcestershire. The family spent several months each year at Ardross, with house parties enjoying the grouse moors, fishing and deer forests. The Ardross estate was broken up and sold in 1937. The next owners lived there until 1983, when the estate was purchased by the McTaggart family, who have since been extremely active in bringing the Formal Garden, Walled Garden, shrubberies and lawns back into good condition.
