Hopper History Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to this Upper Saddle River pre-revolutionary homestead and museum. Please respect this area and search with care. This is a micro cache. Use the spoiler hint if needed, and please respect the area. Please replace as found.  Bring Your Own Pen.  Room for log and very small trackables only.

The Hopper-Goetschius House dates back to 1739 and is the oldest remaining house in the borough.  Built by the Hopper family, the home was recorded in surveyor Charles Clinton's journal in 1739, but it is possible that it is even older.  In 1814, the house became the home of Rev. Stephen Goetschius, of the Old Stone Church down the road, and remained in his family for a century and a half. You can visit the Reverend and many Hopper-Geotschius relatives at another cache nearby, GeOld Stone Churchyard.  There was no running water in the house until 1962 when the Reverend's great-grandson, Steve, lived here and updated the home. (Check out the old outhouse, still on the property.)   The family donated the home to Upper Saddle River in 1985.  Today the house is a museum and hosts many historic events throughout the year.   There are several interesting buildings on the property.  Take some time to check it all out.  Many other sites in Bergen County are connected to the Hopper Family including a cache in Mahwah called Hopper Slave Cemetery.

Please do not disturb anything in this area.  The cache container is hidden in plain sight. Please don't cover it up.
