Geocache Description:

Ratisbonne Monastery is a monastery in the Rehavia neighborhood of Jerusalem, Israel, established by Marie-Alphonse Ratisbonne, a French convert from Judaism. Work on the building, designed by the French architect M. Daumat, began in 1874 on a barren hill, now in the center of West Jerusalem.

The building itself is not only beautiful but has a fascinating history. Since 1884 It was a Monastery, The headquarters of an Austrian artillery battalion during world war I, a shelter for the Jewish refugees from Kafar Atzion during the Israel independence war, after the Israeli independence war when the area of Mt. Scopus was too dangerous the Hebrew university transferred it facilities to Ratisbonne (after it transferred back to Mt. Scopus the monastery was returned to the Catholic church). From 1970 the place serves as a Jewish-Christian Theological study center and in 1998 it received the Vatican award. In the end of the 90's some of the land was sold for a luxury building project named "the heart of Rehavia". Today the monastery serves as a pilgrims hostel and a lecture hall. The cache is a homemade magnetic-nano (2cm long). The cache is located outside the monastery and has no pen so you need to bring your own!
