Geocache Description:

The Summer Olympics begin on July 27, 2012, in London, England.  In their honor, we have created a series of caches to highlight the Olympic sporting disciplines.  We will release a new cache as the first medal is awarded in each discipline.  In each cache, you will see a code for the Closing Ceremony cache.  The first 26 cachers who log all 26 sporting, Opening, and Closing caches will win a special Olympic prize.

Tennis made its debut in the inaugural modern Olympics of 1896.  It was discontinued in 1924, but was reintroduced in 1988.  The tennis matches for these Olympics will take place at Wimbledon, the site of the recently completed Grand Slam Wimbledon Tournament.  There are 5 medal events in tennis: Men's Singles and Doubles, Women's Singles and Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

In tennis, the score zero is called "love".  There is some controversy about the origin of this term, with some people believing that it originates from the French term for egg, "l'oeuf."  However, most linguistic experts agree that the most likely source is from the phrase "for love of nothing," meaning for the love of playing without any stakes.

During each game of the match, point scores go from love to 15 to 30 to 40, then point.  Originally, the points were 15-30-45-60.  However, the 45 was changed to 40 as this was easier to say.  If the score gets to 40-40, this is called deuce.  Deuce means two, indicating that the player must score twice in a row to win the game.

In the Olympics, all matches are best of three sets, with the exception of the Men's Final which is best of five sets.

Each country may have up to 12 athletes, with 6 men and 6 women across all the events.  This includes a maximum of four athletes in each Singles and two teams in each Doubles event.  From the competitors already entered into the Singles or Doubles, a maximum of two Mixed Doubles teams from any country may compete in the Mixed Doubles event.  There will be 172 participants in the tennis events at this Olympics (86 men and 86 women).
