Geocache Description:

Olympics - Dive Into It

The Cache is not at the posted coordinates.

This puzzle is not set to be a difficult exercise, but more to educate you in the sport of Diving and help you understand what you will see throughout the upcoming Olympic competitions. You will have to do some research which will include the current FINA rules regarding scoring system and Degree of Difficulty (DD). Then you will rank the divers and their scores will help lead you to the cache.

At the St Louis Olympic Games in 1904, Diving was included in the Olympic program. It has evolved from a sport predominantly comprising of grace and beauty, into one which requires significant acrobatic and technical expertise.

As in most sports, Men and Women compete in separate events. Divers perform a repertoire of different dives from either the 3m springboard or the 10m platform. With the addition of synchronised diving events in 2000, there are now 8 gold medals to be won.

Subjectively scored sports have come under close scrutiny from the IOC and the general public as media has gradually increased its role in sport promotion over recent decades. Negative press from sports such as figure skating and gymnastics has necessitated that similar sports carefully review their judging systems and selections to ensure transparency.  The 2009-2013 FINA diving rules, combined with judge education and accountability minimise the chance for diving judges to exercise bias. They will be noticed by either manual or electronic judge assessment techniques.

The names and Federations of the divers in our virtual competition are actual divers. Some have already had a notable history and success in the sport, and others will be seen competing for their first Olympic medals in London from 29 July - 11 August, 2012.

Aussie Sisso hopes that Matthew Mitcham can repeat his performance from the 2008 Olympic Games but feels he will have stiff competition from the likes of reigning World Champion Qui Bo, European Champion Sascha Klein, and Britain’s Olympic poster boy Tom Daley. Kiwi Sisso is very quiet, as a Diving judge at the past two Olympics and a Referee at these Olympic Games she is impartial and just can’t wait to see some amazing diving.

Your job now is to understand how the diving scoring system works and apply it to a virtual Olympic men's 10m platform final. Below is a list of divers who have completed 5 of their 6 dives. You will calculate the scores in Round 6 and add them to the current standings to complete the final scores and rankings.

To assist you, the table below is designed so you can easily fill in the blanks following your research. The final waypoint can be found by answering the questions correctly.
