Geocache Description:

The Summer Olympics begin on July 27, 2012 in London, England.  In their honor, we have created a series of caches to highlight the Olympic sporting disciplines.  We will release a new cache as the first medal is awarded in each discipline.  In each cache, you will see a code for the Closing Ceremony cache.  The first 26 cachers who log all 26 sporting, Opening, and Closing Ceremony caches will win a special Olympic prize.

No one knows for sure how Triathlon got its start as a sport.  There was a sporting competition involving swimming, cycling and canoeing in 1902.  However, many say it is derived from sporting competitions in France during the 1920s-1930s called "Les trois sports".  The first modern competition to be considered a triathlon took place in 1974 in California.  It was reported this event was not based on the earlier Fench competitions.  Regardless of its origin, it is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.  Since its introduction at the 2000 Olympics, no country has won more than one gold medal.

There are 110 athletes entered in the 2012 Games trying to win either a Men's Triathlon gold medal or a Women's Triathlon gold medal. Fifty-five men and 55 women will compete in a single race together.  Each country may be represented by 3 men and 3 women.  The Olympic triathlon will consist of a 1500m swim, 43km bike ride and 10K run in that order.  The time to transition between swim and bike or bike and run is critical.  Crucial time is often gained or lost during these periods.  The winners are the first male and female to cross the finish line, regardless of how they ranked after the swim and bike portions. Time penalties may be given for hindering a fellow competitor, not transitioning all equipment/clothing (on or off) from one segment of the race to the next, or riding the bike in the transition area.  Time penalties are served in the transition area or in a penalty box during the run portion of the race.

Cache takes you to 8th Avenue Park in Jenison.  There is an entrance fee for non-Georgetown township residents of $3 per person (even if you are walking or biking inside) up to a maximum of $6 per car.  However, the fee is not collected year round.  Park hours are 8 am to 10 pm.

Bring your own writing instrument. DO NOT ATTEMPT FROM OUTSIDE THE PARK!!! (We wrote you should go to the park for a reason!) You can reach it from the park and not be a mountain climber.
