This cache brings you to Nielson Park beach one of Bargara’s two main beaches and the home of the Bundaberg Lifesaving Club. Although a smallish beach it has a lot of history.
The club was formed in 1921. State championships were held here in 1935,1938,1951 and 1960. The club has an enviable record of wins in the march past competition the first being in 1938. Since that time they have won national titles at least 16 times as well as numerous silver and bronze placings. In addition they have won numerous state titles for the marc h past. One occasion they won with a zero points deduction.
The railway came to Bargara in 1913 and a few years later in 1922 the annual Railway picnic was held here until 1972. Trains brought people from Gladstone, Mt Perry and Maryborough. The picnic day outlasted the railway.
In 1946 the very popular Siren of the Surf competition was run in conjunction with the picnic. Teams of marching girls was a feature of this competition .
Today it is the headquarters for lifesavers who patrol a number of beaches in the area. A substantial clubhouse looks out over the ocean and at the right time of the year whales can be seen cruising by on their annual migration.
Just around the headland to the north is Mon Repos beach which can be reached by walking or cycle tracks from here. Mon Repos was the site of Bert Hinkler's historic glider flights and is also a world renowned turtle nesting spot. Thousands of tourists take part in conducted tours during laying and hatching times of the year.
