Geocache Description:

Ancient Valley

The trail is located in Asessippi Provincial Park , Manitoba Provincial Park Pass is required

The Ancient Valley is a self-guiding trail (three kilometer loop) that explores the effects of glacial features on the area. The major natural features of the present landscape were formed as a result of glacial activity that ended about 10,500 years ago. As the ice sheets melted, the water formed temporary lakes in the area. In some cases these lakes existed for centuries before being drained. This mass flow of melted water traveled along paths of least resistance to lower ground. The water wound its way through the region, sometimes emptying to other temporary glacial lakes, like Lake Agassiz. The Asessippi area is where two of these river valleys of melted glacier water met. Overtime the water disappeared from this region and the present day Assiniboine and Shell River remained. The glacier activity carved steep valley walls and deposited minerals and stone that the water carried along the valley floor; forever changing the landscape of the area.

Answers to all the questions are found in the interpretive signs along the trail Signage at the start of the trail. Do NOT post answer in your log! Please e-mail my profile with your answers to the following questions:

1) How thick were the glacial ice sheets 30,000 years ago?

2) As you walk along the trail you are traveling on and among boulders that were deposited by glaciers. What type of rocks are these boulders?

Direction Post - Keep Right

3) Why are there stands of Aspens located throughout the area?

4) What two river valleys were created as a result of the torrents of water from the melting glacier?

5) As you drive through the area you will notice various steps along the river valley. How were these steps formed and how long ago?
