Sax Man's Campout



(9th annual)

September 7-8, 2012

This campout is the longest running annual gathering of Geocachers in the Rocky Mountain Region! It draws primarily from Colorado, but has brought cachers from other states as well as another country. We've brought cachers together from Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, and Germany. Let’s see how many more states and countries we can have represented!

This year we're heading out to the Western Slope. The campground is just across Hwy 50 from the Blue Mesa Reservoir and has RV or tent sites and cabins available. This is the weekend after Labor Day, but you never know how fast the campsites will fill up. MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS TODAY!

This year's event is going to be much smaller than in past years for a variety of reasons. The kids urged me to have a campout regardless of everything that has happened in the last couple of years, so here we are. I have National Guard drill in Montrose this weekend, but will be at the campground Friday and Saturday evening. As a result, this year's event lacks the full day of group activities I usually do, but still gives us time to get together for the official event dinner.

Event Schedule:
Friday Evening: Check-in, fishing at the lake, visit us at our campfire

Saturday: Explore the area on your own / find some geocaches around the lake.

Saturday Evening: 7pm Potluck dinner / Meet-n-Greet around Sax's campfire (BYOB).

Blue Mesa reservoir is the largest body of water in Colorado and sits at an elevation of around 7,500 ft. Temperatures remain warm in the late summer (80's likely) but there is always a chance of afternoon thunderstorms to cool things off. There are few trees around the lake, but plenty in the campground. There are two pools, a play area for the kids, and much more.
